Body + Brain Training Center

The Body + Brain Training Center, located on Main St. in Smithtown, offers classes and workshops in stretching, Tai Chi, yoga and meditation.

Body + Brain in Smithtown was originally part of a Body + Brain franchise, with several different locations, however current owner, J.H Lee, chose to become an independent business as of 2015. Although her background is in philosophy, Ms. Lee began training with the Body + Brain organization over 15 years ago. She is the sole instructor at the center, which currently has about 100 students. Some of her students have been training with her for over 10 years. 

Ms. Lee stated the philosophy behind Body + Brain is to increase energy flow by undoing and unblocking emotional stress. “There is a strong mental and physical connection, and the classes are designed to create harmony between the two,” stated Ms. Lee. Clients frequently present with physical aches and pain, coupled with emotional issues.

Group classes are the typical format, however individual sessions are also available if such attention is warranted. The center has a reception area and a large studio for training, similar to a dance studio.

Dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic was difficult, and the school had to close for several months starting in March 2020, according to Ms. Lee. Virtual classes were not an option. Once the County relaxed in-person learning, Body + Brain was able to reopen with masking precautions. They are now operating normally.

According to the school’s brochure, the goals of the classes are to:

• Strengthen the immune system
• Enhance body alignment
• Improve sleep
• Enhance focus and creativity and
• Increase confidence and drive
