Weekly Streaming Recap: Week Ending 1/7/2022

The Book of Boba Fett Episode 2 (Disney+): Continuing from last week’s boring slog through how great Boba Fett is that is purely designed to appease a certain segment of the fanbase who felt slighted by the sequel trilogy. Watch as nothing bad happens to Boba Fett through an hour this time and he helps the Tusken Raiders rob a train that is smuggling Spice. Apparently Tusken Raiders never had speeders because Boba Fett never taught them how to ride? Seems like a silly cop out. That said, they did introduce Black Krrsantan which could be the beginning of an introduction to a live action Doctor Aphra so who knows. If the show is just a vehicle to introduce characters to a larger audience, maybe it might be an expensive endeavor with little payout (The Mandalorian Season 2).

Naomi Episode 1 (CW App/Channel 11): Naomi
tells an entirely new story for televised superheroes. It departs from the typical formula that has dominated the CW since before it was rebranded into the CW with Birds of Prey in 2003 and Smallville in 2001. Rather than the traditional villain of the week format, Naomi is a mystery-driven character study about what happens when a world gets introduced to extraordinary powers. The pilot may have some “pilot-dialogue,” but the actors and actresses can carry the material to make it enjoyable. Naomi debuts on Tuesday, January 11th at 9 PM on the CW (PIX11) and is available for free on the CW app the next day.

The Lost Daughter (Netflix): The Lost Daughter made its debut last year at the Venice Film Festival and won the Golden Osella for Best Screenplay. It marks the directorial debut for Academy Award nominated actress Maggie Gyllenhaal who is generating awards buzz in major categories. It is a psychological drama about what happens when a woman who became a mother young sees someone else down the same path she was on.

The Eternals (Disney+): If a viewer missed The Eternals
back in November, they truly missed a fantastic cinematic experience. While the movie may be long and the movie may veer off into what some may consider pointless tangents, the visuals of The Eternals make it worth the watch. It is distinct from anything else that Marvel Studios has made and, for better or for worse, Marvel definitely let Chloe Zhao tell the story she wanted with minimal interference from the studio.

The Hand of God (Netflix): One of the best things about the prevalence of streamers is the ability for foreign movies to reach audiences that would have never seen it in the past. The Hand of God has made the shortlist for the 2022 Academy Awards as Italy’s selection for Best International Feature. It follows Fabietto from Naples in the 1980s as he comes of age. It can feel formless at times, like most coming-of-age stories, but in the end that’s what makes them work.
