Weekly Streaming Series Recap

Wheel of Time Episode 4 (Amazon): Continuing their journey, the story takes a breath to get to know the characters a little more closely. This episode continues moving toward exploring who is or is not the dragon who may or may not break the world. This may sound infuriating, but it works in the larger context of a series rather than a movie.

Hawkeye Episodes 1 and 2 (Disney+): Hawkeye launches with a mixed first two episodes that introduce new energy into an existing character but still manages to lag a bit. Any scene with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) is fun to watch because of the sarcastic and overeager energy that Kate brings, but the show manages to fall behind when Clint is around to grind the momentum to a screeching halt.

Super Crooks (Netflix): Super Crooks is an adult animated show based on the comic of the same name from legendary comic creator Mark Millar. Developed as part of the same overall development deal to create shows in the “Millar-verse,” this show tells the story of a supervillain who has been captured, served a jail sentence, and goes out for one last heist with a team of other ex-villains. It is Oceans 11 meets Suicide Squad in the best possible way.

The Beatles: Get Back (Disney+): Peter Jackson directs this lengthy documentary that features restoration of audio and video footage from the 1969 studio sessions that led to the creation of the album Let it Be. It is a lengthy endeavor to watch the entire documentary with two parts clocking in at almost three hours, but if a viewer can find the room in their schedule to watch the whole thing, it is worth the time, though not all at once.

You May Have Missed:

The Mitchells Vs. The Machines (Netflix): Originally set to be released as Connected in 2020, The Mitchells Vs. The Machines continues Sony Animation’s win streak with Lord and Miller since signing their overall development deal. This movie delivers the same heartfelt message that one would expect from an animated family movie while still leaning into the stylistic comedy that made previous entries (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) work. Due to the pandemic, it was punted to streaming, meaning many people may have missed out on this hidden gem that is a frontrunner for a Best Animated Picture nomination.
