Weekly Entertainment Recap: Week of February 5th, 2024

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 Finale (Disney+): This show did not fumble at the end per say, the resolution of the Oracle’s prediction does fall a little flat though since it almost entirely relies on the viewer remembering that Percy had another friend six episodes prior that is a good enough friend to warrant being mentioned by the Oracle. It also would have been nice to have Percy show some ingenuity when it comes to defeating his enemies instead of relying on brute force to the power of gods to handle it. Hopefully next season Percy gets a chance to develop this part of himself a little more, especially if he is going to be facing off against Cronos as the series long antagonist.

The Marvels (Disney+): The Marvels was one of the strongest comic book movies of 2023, even if it was a complete misfire at the box office. The movie has a lot of heart and comedy with some well-executed action sequences. The end sets up the future and, with the potential of a Deadpool 3 trailer on the imminent horizon, it is fitting that this movie hits Disney+ on Wednesday. For a full review, click here.

True Detective: Night Country Episode 4 (HBO/Max): There’s something about this show that distinctly feels like Silent Hill. It is unlikely that the show is going to fully lean into the paranormal in the way that Silent Hill does, but the way that the show plays with the surreality of the situation and couples with the setting creates. That said, there is still something missing from this season that makes it feel just a little bit off. Maybe it is the fact that the more supernatural elements being in the forefront is kind of a waste since it would be weird for this show to have it be truly paranormal, even if the end result is something a little weird but grounded with a realistic explanation.
