Weekly Entertainment Recap: Week of June 5th, 2023

Three Thousand Years of Longing (Amazon Prime): George Miller’s latest film was slightly underrated last year. Maybe it was the fact that the third act is a little long and feels like it ends a few too many times, but the costuming and production design are top-notch and make the film worth a watch. The story is also grounded enough despite being an outlandish period fantasy piece that it will keep the viewer engaged in the Djinn’s story. For a full review, click here.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Paramount+): Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is one of the most fun movies of 2023. It has great comedic moments, some excellent effects, and fight choreography, and it uses the high fantasy setting to great effect. It is definitely worth a watch if someone is looking for a pleasant two hours. For a full review, click here.

Moonlight (Max): Back in 2017, Moonlight won Best Picture which was well deserved. All three actors who play Chiron (Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders, and Alex Hibbert) are fantastic, as are the supporting cast members played by Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali, and Janelle Monae. The direction by Barry Jenkins is also phenomenal and, if one has not watched this movie yet, it is definitely worth a watch.

The Black Hole (Disney+): For what the movie was in 1979, The Black Hole has aged remarkably well, especially when one considers that the effects were not done by ILM. The movie follows the crew of the USS Palomino as they discover the Cygnus, a spacecraft that has been missing for years. As they board the ship, they discover the crew has become warped and deranged as they plan to become the first crew to explore a black hole. At the time it was Disney’s most expensive movie ever made and the first PG movie by the studio. To be honest, it is surprising that this movie has not been remade or been given a sequel in recent years.
