The Christmas Season officially began on Friday evening, as Santa threw the switch to light up the tree on the front lawn of the Smithtown Library.
The festivities began at 6:00 p.m. as vocalists from Rock n Roll University sang a variety of holiday favorites, under the direction of Jessica Gallone. Following their performance, Santa arrived promptly at 6:30 to light the tree. Children in attendance joined in for the 10 second countdown.
The annual tree lighting event started five years ago, although it was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. “The tree lights are donated by the Town of Smithtown,” noted Gina Ferreira, a member of the library’s community relations department. “We’re expecting about 125 people to attend the event tonight.”
Following the tree lighting, visitors were welcomed into the warmer confines of the library to enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, and of course photos with Santa. Tables were also set up in the community room with puzzles and games.
The event also served as a collection for the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry.
