This week, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is making the rounds in Kings Park, sponsoring both a food drive and a blood drive as the summer season winds down.
St. Joseph’s Church, which is located on Church St. in the heart of Kings Park, is hosting both events. While the food pantry is open Monday and Thursday from 1-4 pm, the blood drive is taking place on Thursday Aug. 25th.
On Monday, August 22nd, legislator Rob Trotta was on hand at the food pantry, to say hello, while his legislative assistant, Susan Eckert, helped to unpack and sort donations. Trotta, who represents the 13th
district of the Suffolk County Legislature, explained they have been supporting the food drive since July of 2018. “It’s all about helping people, it’s the right thing to do,” says Trotta, who is currently serving his 5th two-year term in the legislature.
Church volunteer Annette DeFino, who runs the food pantry, explained that people can both drop off items, such as canned goods, pasta, bread, sauce and other foods, as well as take food. Recipients need only to complete a brief form. The pantry appeared well supplied.
When questioned how the food is dispersed, Ms. Eckert said, “there is definitely an acute need in the area, whether caused by a loss of income, or some other need.” Ms. Eckert also pointed out Legislator Trotta sponsors other local food drives, including Island Harvest and Long Island Cares.
The blood drive will take place on Thursday, from 1 – 7 pm, in Travis Hall adjacent to the church. Donors will receive a voucher for a free beer, cider or soda at a participating brewery. “There is definitely a need for blood, especially at local hospitals,” said Ms. Eckert. Further information on the blood drive can be found at Legislator Trotta’s web site, https://www.scnylegislature.us/DocumentCenter/View/86322/08252022-Legislator-Trotta-Announces-Blood-Drive-from-1pm-7pm---Church-of-Saint-Joseph-PDF, including a list of participating breweries.
Legislator Trotta took the time to thank Charlie Reichert, who is the CEO of the food chain IGA, for his generosity with the food bank, as well as many other worthy causes on Long Island. For example, at the IGA in Fort Salonga, there is a large bin available where customers can donate food items, without having to stop at the church.
