How do you feel about placing the study of death into early education? It is nothing to fear but an opportunity to embrace life more fully. By placing death in the context of time, existence, relationships, art, language, and legacy to name a few, we provide children with a framework for understanding their place in the world.

Philosophical engagement with death can encourage children to think critically about their values and priorities. It challenges them to consider what legacy they wish to leave behind, how they can cultivate meaningful relationships, and how they can contribute to the world. Far from being a source of despair, these reflections can empower young minds to live with intention and gratitude. We must explain how precious and short life could be! This knowledge will hopefully bring out in the child resilience, creativity, and an appreciation for the fleeting beauty of life. In acknowledging death, we empower the next generation to live not in its shadow, but better understand its illuminating lessons.
