The Smithtown Chronicle is seeking contributing writers to join our team. We are looking for Smithtown/Long Island residents with a passion for writing and preserving our local news.
Positions Open:
Writer to cover Smithtown schools
This person would attend the Smithtown Central School District Board of Education monthly meetings. Coverage of school events (ex. fundraisers) and features on student achievements and programs are required.
Writer to cover local events
The candidate for this position will appear at events hosted by local businesses and organizations. The events would include festivals, fundraisers, performances, art shows, etc.
Writer to cover local government
Our ideal candidate will attend the Town of Smithtown Board meetings, typically on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays at 2 p.m. You would be sharing updates with the community on the projects that they’re working on and important issues of interest to the community. 2-4 articles per month are needed.
Writer to cover local sports
This candidate will be going to games organized by the local schools and universities. They would be sharing updates with the community on upcoming games, schedule changes, profiles on new players, etc.
Writer to cover movies/tv
The writer for this spot will be attending new/upcoming movies and giving reviews. You would also be sharing tv reviews, previews and award show predictions and results. 4-5 articles per month are needed.
Qualifications (Preferred, but not required)
- Keen eye for detail and ability to follow style guidelines
- Ability to write engaging and compelling stories on deadlines
- Ability to collaborate effectively with editorial staff and other writers
- Communication and time-management skills
- Experience with journalistic writing and reporting
