The Strohm Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose main objective is to increase funds that go to cancer research. On March 6, they pledged $100,000 to the Stony Brook Cancer Center.
This foundation originated in the 1990s. Jane Stanczuk Strohm, Kathleen Sarna Strohm and Lucille Montrony Strohm, known collectively and colloquially as the Three Strohm Sisters, were all diagnosed with breast cancer. Seeking to spare others the pain and suffering caused by this disease, they became activists and then community organizers. Eventually, they became philanthropists when they established the Three Strohm Sisters Family Foundation in 1999, according to the Foundation’s website.
“So my family is the type of family that if we don’t like something, we do something about it,” said Edward Strohm, executive director of the foundation. “So they formed the foundation in 1999. We just had it rebranded, so now it’s called the Strohm Foundation.”
Strohm organizes special fundraising events whose proceeds go to cancer research. Such events include car shows, donations, galas, special dinners and more.
Their pledge is dedicated for all types of cancer research. “The great thing is that New York State matched the pledge of $100,000 and in a private philanthropic foundation they matched so it wound up becoming a $300,000 grant,” Strohm said.
With their pledge made, the Strohm Foundation has to reach their goal of $100,000. Strohm plans to have more fundraising events. Some of which include a murder mystery dinner, a sword and shield gala and a car show.
