Look Left, Look Right, Step Up by the Gent

I recently moved. It is a very daunting task, especially at my age. As I placed all my clothing in the new closet I came across clothes that I hadn’t worn in 25 years. I tried on some of the older sports jackets and suits only to be embarrassed to learn how tight they fit if they fit at all!

Sitting on a folding chair in that closet and looking at the wardrobe many thoughts and memories started to rush through my mind. A particular sports jacket or suit I wore for a wedding, baptismal, wake, or other special occasions. Sadly, most of them did not fit me anymore. Instead of donating them, I now tell myself as I get older and start eating less, I might be able to fit into them again, fat chance!

The one memory that really stood out to me was a particular wedding I was going to. I had been doing pretty well and wanted to look “the part” at that time. I remember noticing successful people were wearing suits and sports jackets with four buttons on their sleeves. None of my sports jackets or suits had four buttons. It was time for a new suit. At the time, it seemed so important to me. I bought that new suit and every sports jacket and suit after that needed to have four buttons. How insignificant those buttons are to me at this stage of my life.

It did bring a big smile thinking of that particular occasion. I am sure most of us have had some similar “Four Buttons” episode.
