Weekly Entertainment Recap: Week of November 6th, 2023

Loki Season 2 Episode 5 (Disney+): This show does a lot of really interesting things with branching timelines and allowing the characters to breathe and become their own entities outside of the TVA. The meta nature of this episode is also kind of cool and allows them to get around some of the lack of rules but still strange rigidity that has plagued this season, especially defining it as a need to work the rules within the guidelines of fiction rather than science. With only one episode left it will be interesting to see if they can stick the landing or if this will dovetail in with The Marvels.

Invincible Season 2 Episode 1 (Amazon Prime): It is fairly easy to be tired of the multiverse as a concept, especially when it has been done to death the way it has been over the last few years. That said, the examples of when it works well are the ones where the concept is being used to showcase alternate versions of the known characters, not just for cameos and so far season two is doing it well. The villain is compelling and comes from an interesting altruistic place and it will be fun to see how this plays out over the rest of the season.

Quiz Lady (Hulu): Sandra Oh and Awkwafina have great chemistry but some of the comedic moments do fall flat because the movie is functionally built on the backs of the two leads. The premise is kind of interesting, however this is not a movie anyone should rush out to see unless they are massive fans of either of the actresses leading the movie. It’s not terrible, but it is the epitome of a streaming comedy where it is forgotten as soon as one finishes watching it.
